Las Cruces, New Mexico - Freda de Otis (Johnson) Estes, Flatt went to be with the Lord on September 15, 2024. Freda was born July 12, 1928 in Caldwell, Kansas to parents, Freda Madora (Grammer) and Oscar William Johnson. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Marian Louise Austin and Lurley Blanch Green, along with her firstborn daughter, Loretta Jean (Estes) Frow. Family remaining include her sister, Dorothy Moline, Graham, Texas and brother O.W. "Corky" Johnson and his wife Darlene, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; her daughter, Gail Libbin and husband Jim, Las Cruces, New Mexico, and son William "Nick" Estes and wife Shawn, Eugene, Oregon.
Granny, as many of her grandchildren called her, will be remembered for her fearless spirit of adventure. Grandchildren include Nathaniel Stone, Savannah, Georgia, Amber (Stone) and husband Ryan Fowler, Ada, Oklahoma, and Audry (Jordan) Forbes and husband Zach Haws, Paonia, Colorado; Ian Stamper and wife Arelene, Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Aaron Stamper, Spain/Colorado; and Sarah (Estes) Feldman, Gresham, Oregon, and Charles Estes and wife Sarah, Corvallis, Oregon. Great grandchildren include Gabby Fowler, and Abigail (Fowler), husband Nathan Truett, and their child Annalise Hope; Isaac Forbes; Emma, Karaline, and Julie Ann Stamper; and Caleb and Ilah Mae Feldman. Granny had many more step-children, step-grandchildren, relatives, and friends whom she spoke fondly of and dearly loved.
Freda received her Master's degree in Art Education from East Central University in Ada. Mrs. Flatt taught art at Byng Public Schools for many years before retiring early to paint full time. Granny leaves behind a legacy of her artwork. She painted murals for the Chickasaw Nation, Pontotoc County Agri-Plex, Byng, Homer and Francis Cafeterias, the Oklahoma Veterans Center in Sulphur, as well as a few church baptistries. Freda's paintings can be found in the Chickasaw Council House Museum in Tishomingo, the Nature Center in Sulphur, the Choctaw County Library in Hugo, and in many private collections around Oklahoma, Texas, and Arkansas. Her awards are too numerous to name. She was a competitor and her persistent dedication and talent paid off.
A Celebration of Life service will be held in Freda de Otis Flatt's honor on Friday, July 25, 2025, at The Refuge Church, 1001 Tipton Terrace in Ada, Oklahoma 74820, at 11:00 a.m.
