Mattie's Story

Services for Mattie Francis Watkins Brooks, 104, 0f Stuart are at 2 p.m. Friday at Stuart Church of Christ. Officiating are Delton Tollett and Chris Rampey. Burial follows at White Chimney Cemetery, Stuart.
Mrs. Brooks died Oct. 3, 2016, at Stuart. The youngest of four children, she was born Dec. 9, 1911, in Konawa to William Alto and Emma Lee West Watkins.
As an infant, Mrs. Brooks moved with her family to the Stuart area. She attended elementary school at Stuart before moving to the White Chimney community and finished her education through the eighth grade at White Chimney School.
On Jan. 21, 1928, she married Elihu Carl Brooks at Calvin. He died June 3, 1973, at McAlester.
They had two children, Leroy Carl and Mildred Louise. Leroy died March 17, 1994, at Ada. Mildred died Oct. 17, 1983, at McAlester.
Mrs. Brooks was a member of Stuart Church of Christ. In addition to being a homemaker and mother, Mrs. Brooks worked at Seampruf clothing manufacturer in McAlester and gathered grapes and other fruit in the vineyards of California.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl; her children, Leroy Brooks and Mildred DeWeese; a granddaughter, Wanda June DeWeese Nealon; two brothers, Farley Watkins and Collins Watkins; and a sister, Irene McGehee.
Survivors include a daughter-in-law, Wynema Brooks, Stuart; a son-in-law, Lloyd DeWeese, McAlester; five grandchildren and their spouses, Brenda and Delton Tollett, Les and Kareen Brooks and Malaya Brooks, all of Stuart, Wayne DeWeese, Crowder, Pat Nealon, Katy, Texas, and Karen and Bruce Clemons, Granite Falls, North Carolina; six great-grandchildren and their spouses, Jarrod and Jennifer Tollett and Leslie Carl Brooks II, all of Ada, Janet and Bryan Hale, Stuart, Krista Clemons, Granite Falls, N.C., Bryan and Johanna Clemons, Colorado Springs, Colo., and Rebecca and Heath Roberie, Austin, Texas; great-great-grandchildren, Baylee Hale, Breana Hale, Blayne Hale, Brooks Hale, all of Stuart, Alex Roberie of Austin, Texas, Evelyn Tollett and Parker Tollett, both of Ada; three nieces and a nephew, Dora Lee Kitchens, Stuart, Earlene Cole, San Antonio, Texas, Beverly Evans, Perkins, Okla., and Willie Watkins, McAlester.
Bearers are Jarrod Tollett, Leslie Carl Brooks II, Bryan Hale, Bryan Clemons, Heath Roberie and Jerry Dale Hickerson. Honorary bearers are Les Brooks, Wayne DeWeese, Bruce Clemons, Loyd DeWeese Wille Watkins, Pat Nealon and the men of the church.
Memorials may be made to White Chimney Cemetery, 8717 East 1482 Road, Stuart, OK 74570.
Brumley-Mills Funeral Home of McAlester is in charge of arrangements.
