Mary Ann McKeown Davis of Dallas passed away peacefully March 20, 2017. Mary was born July 13, 1932, in Ada to Roy Sanders McKeown and Jewell Chastain McKeown.
She was a musical child born into a music-loving family. She had an ear for music very early and could read music as soon as she could read words. She sang in many musical organizations throughout her school career, at times as a soloist. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in vocal music education from East Central State College in Ada, and a master's in music education with voice emphasis from the University of Oklahoma in Norman. Although Mary occasionally directed school and church choirs, she much preferred singing in them.
She sang in the Dallas Civic Opera Chorus, the Dallas Civic Chorus, and several madrigal groups. She was also a devoted singer in the church choirs of St. Luke's, St. Michael's and Holy Cross of Dallas. After teaching private voice lessons for many years, she became a teacher with the Dallas Independent School District until her retirement.
She developed an interest in history, joining the Texas Old Missions and Forts Restoration Association, serving in several offices.
She is survived by her brother, Loren (Rebecca) McKeown; her son, Kirk Wallace Davis; her daughter, Ann Elizabeth (Barry) Davis; her grandson, Zak Martin; her granddaughter, Diana Tompkins; her grandson, Daniel Wallace Davis; and a great-granddaughter, Daisy Tompkins.
A private interment will be held with the family.
