Wilma Lucille Hightower, 91, of Gerty passed away Aug. 21, 2017, in Holdenville.
She was born Nov. 8, 1925, in Gerty to Floyd and Eula (Carter) Ward. She graduated from Gerty High School.
She felt it her civic duty and joined the legion of women supporting the war effort and became a Rosie the Riveter. She married Bob Hightower in 1944, and the couple made their home in Gerty. Later, after raising her three boys, she graduated from East Central University with a bachelor of arts degree, majoring in education. She later began her career teaching school in Stuart.
Wilma loved to read, quilt and embroider. She loved her family and enjoyed spending time with them.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Bob; and siblings Sonny Ward, Kenneth Ward, Fran Metzler and Nell Haynes.
Survivors include her children Mickey Hightower and wife, Judy, of Prague, Donnie Hightower and wife, Margaret, of Gerty, and Rex Hightower and wife, Regina, of Gerty; grandchildren Shawn Hightower and Becky, Blake Hightower and Jill, Paul Hightower and wife, Kay, Julie Hightower, JR Hightower and wife, Tisha, Crystal Hightower and Billy; great-grandchildren Faith, Paisley, Peyton, Jadyn, Tate, Reece, Briar, Lily, Hunter and Stormi; sister Judy Huffstutlar and husband, Frank, of Allen; as well as several nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
Funeral services are scheduled for 1 p.m. Thursday at the Harmony Missionary Baptist Church in Gerty. Bro. Paul Hightower will officiate the service.
Pallbearers will be Paul Hightower, James Hightower, Crystal Hightower, Shawn Hightower, Julie Hightower and Blake Hightower. Honorary bearers will be James Ward, Debbie Liljequist, Jerry Huffstutlar, Larry Haynes, Mark Hightower and Mary Ann Starkey. Interment will follow at the Gerty Cemetery.
