Marvin L. Barnes Services for Marvin L. Barnes, 96, of Ada are at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Criswell Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Jimmy Balentine will officiate. Burial will follow at Rosedale Cemetery.
Mr. Barnes died Wednesday, Nov. 30, 2016, at his home. He was born March 26, 1920, in Cumberland to Elmer and Ivy Lee Dunham Barnes. He graduated from Ada High School. He married Lela Stanley Whittle Dec. 31, 1957. She preceded him in death Aug. 14, 2009.
Mr. Barnes was a legend in the quarter horse business for more than 50 years. He was best known for his famous mare, FL Lady Bug, who had many foals who could literally run a hole in the wind. He raised and trained his horses. He was inducted into the Quarter Horse Hall of Fame. His Mr. Master Bug won the All-American Futurity in 1982. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
Survivors include three nieces, Almeda Harrel of Ada, Cheryl Parks of Minco and Beverly Johnson of Austin, Texas; and one nephew, Kenneth R. Morris of Minco.
He was preceded in death by his son, Michael Barnes; and a stepson, Jerry Vaughn Whittle.
Bearers will be Troy Reust, Travis Reust, Vaughn Whittle, Kenneth Winters, Mike Parks and Justin Magness. Honorary bearers will be Johnny Barney and Fred Frederickson.
