Leon's Story

A lifelong resident of Ada, Mr. Leon Virgil Greenwood, 67, passed away Nov. 7, 2016, in Oklahoma City. Leon was born Jan. 16, 1949, in Milburn to Virgil and Geraldine (Factor) Greenwood.
Serving his country faithfully, Leon served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam Conflict. He worked as a surveillance manager for the Chickasaw Nation for many years and served as the Seminole Nation program director for 16 years. Leon loved his Chickasaw heritage. He was a longtime, respected elder of the nation. Leon performed native dances all over the state, attending Indian rodeos and riding bareback. He was also the owner and operator of Greenwood Family Restaurant.
Leon is survived by his companion and special friend, Peggy Walker Greenwood of Ada; four sisters, Diane Catron of Tishomingo, Pat Greenwood Cox of Ada, Evelyn Wood of Stonewall and Linda Greenwood of Purcell; a brother, Dewayne Greenwood of Blanchard; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, longtime friends and neighbors.
Leon was preceded in death by his parents and three sisters, Carolyn Mendoza, Virgina Boston and Georgie Fraizer.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Chickasaw Nation Community Center. Chaplain Randy Wade and Pastor Steve Walls will officiate. Interment will follow at Greenwood Cemetery in Milburn. Family visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Smith-Phillips Funeral Home.
