Laverne Floyd Mrs. Vivian "Laverne" Floyd passed away Nov. 21, 2018 at the age of 82.
Memorial services took place Wednesday in Cookeville, Tennessee.
Laverne was born Thursday, Nov. 28, 1935, in Durant to the late Marvin and Johnnie Pruitt Baldwin.
Laverne attended elementary schools in Oklahoma and Texas and graduated from Paioli High School.
She then studied Medical Technology at East Central College in Ada, where she would later receive degrees in both medical technology and education.
Laverne met her future husband, Joe M. Floyd (son of longtime Ada residents Furman and Estelle Floyd), while at East Central.
Joe and Laverne lived and worked in Stillwater, Ada and Navasota, Texas, before settling in Cookeville, Tennessee, with their two children, Joe Michael and Cindy Kay.
Laverne purchased the medical yechnology school located in Cookeville and developed affiliations with universities in Tennessee, Kentucky and Virginia. She expanded the local school to include additional areas of study, including medical secretary and business and computer education.
Laverne eventually established a second school for medical technology in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. During this same time, she established and managed the family business, Floyd Properties.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Marlene Meyers.
She is survived by her husband, Joe Floyd, a son, J. Michael Floyd, and a daughter, Cindy Hill, all of Cookeville, Tennessee; three brothers, J.M. (Janet) Baldwin of Springfield, Tennessee, Ronnie (Frances) Baldwin of Cookeville and Charles (Velda) Keen of Houston; one grandchild, Ashley Lizbeth Hill of Cookeville; and many other relatives and friends.

I am a current resident of Joe and Laverne Floyd properties. I had the upmost respect for Mrs. Floyd.! She always went out of her way to take care of any issue I had! She is definitely missed!
