Karen Laverne Battles, 68, of Mustang was born Nov. 12, 1949, in Houston, Texas, and departed on Jan. 27, 2018.
Karen was a 1968 graduate of Lamar Consolidated High School, Rosenberg, Texas; 1982 B.A. in human relations/social work, East Central University; 1984 master's of social work, clinical specialty, University of Oklahoma.
Karen's career was in the field of mental health, children, family, foster care and adoption for 30 years. In 1988, Karen developed standards of therapeutic foster care for Child Welfare, Oklahoma Department of Human Service,s that led to legislation. Karen faithfully served thousands of children and families during her career.
Karen is survived by her husband, Bob Battles, Mustang; a son, Matt Hope, Oklahoma City; daughters Amy Hope, Yukon, an Holly and husband, Ryan McKinney, and three grandchildren, Kendrik, Colby and Courtney of Yukon, OK; and sisters in Texas, Judy Nicholson, Victoria, Iona Walzel, Sugarland, and Jimmie and husband, Bill Hayes, Angleton, Texas. Karen also had numerous nieces and nephews as well as great- and great-great-nieces and -nephews.
Karen was preceded in death by her parents, James Alfred and Florence Mae DeLawder; maternal grandparents, Stephen Moylan and Beatrice Iona Swensen; paternal grandparents, James Franklin and Emma Hazel DeLawder; uncles, Moylan Richard Swensen and Francis Edward Swensen; cousin, Stephen Charles Swensen; uncle, Travis Culberson Langford and aunt, Emma and brothers-in-law, Robert "Bob" Lewis Walzel Sr. and Bobby Nicholson Sr.
A celebration of life service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Mustang United Methodist Church, 211 State Highway 152, Mustang. A private burial by immediate family only will follow at Yukon Cemetery, Yukon.
