The family will receive the comfort of friends and loved ones for Joseph "Little Joe" Smith Jr. Sunday from 1 to 3 at Criswell Funeral Home in Ada. Friends and family may call for viewing from noon to 9 p.m. Saturday at Criswell Funeral Home.
Joseph's remains will be honorably escorted to New Mexico by his brother, Robert Smith, where he will be laid to rest along side his father and brother.
Graveside Services will be held at San Jon Cemetery in San Jon, New Mexico. Services will be conducted by Dunn Funeral Home in Tucumcari, New Mexico. A U.S. Army chaplain will officiate.
Mr. Smith passed away Thursday, July 20, 2017, at his home. He was born Jan. 15, 1957, in Tucumcari to Joseph Palmer and Barbara Day Smith. He graduated from San Jon Municipal High School in 1975. He was of the Baptist faith and made his salvation known.
Mr. Smith retired as a specialist fourth-class from the Army National Guard, part of the U.S. Armed Forces. He enlisted in 1975 and served until 1987.
He resided at White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico with Debra Williams and their children, where he reported for active duty at McGregor Range.
Survivors include his mother, Barbara Smith of the home; two daughters, Debra Cranford and her husband, Rick, of Ada and Jessica Gaither and her husband, Zachary, of Ada; two sons, Ricky Smith of Ada and Zachary Smith and his wife, Destiny, of Sulphur; grandchildren, Megan Ramsey, Charles Joseph "CJ" Brooks (name sake), Dalton Palmer Ramsey (name sake), Chloe Ramsey and Nicholas Cranford; a great-grandson, Bentley Ramsey; a brother, Robert Smith and his wife, Rhonda, of Dexter, New Mexico; his nephew, Caleb Smith; his niece, Tanya Patterson and her husband, Andy Patterson; and many other extended family who Joe loved very much.
He was preceded in death by his father, Joseph P. Smith Sr.; and a brother, Ricky L. Smith.
Bearers will be Marlin Terry, Ricky Cranford, Zackary Gaither, Ricky Smith, Zackary Smith, Caleb Smith, Andy Patterson and Caleb Gould.
