Eldon's Story

Eldon Carl (E.C.) Nelson, 82, died at his home Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2017. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Highland Park United Methodist Church, 524 N. Stallard, Stillwater, with the Rev. Valerie Steele officiating.
E.C. was born to Carl and Ruth Nelson in Dola, Ohio, on Dec. 13, 1935. He married Martha Joanne (Jo) Hemmerly on June 26, 1957.
He attended Dola Elementary School and graduated from Hardin Northern High School in 1953. Eldon attended The Ohio State University until 1957, when he received a B.Sc. in animal science and agricultural education, during which time he was an officer in Alpha Zeta Fraternity.
After teaching vo-ag at Belle Center High School for one year, he returned to The Ohio State University to pursue graduate school in animal science. He earned a M.Sc. in 1960 and a Ph.D. in 1963, whereupon he accepted a teaching and research position in the department of biochemistry and molecular biology at Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, focusing on the isolation and identification of metabolites of Vitamin A, synthetic analogs and related retinoids. He rose through the ranks as professor and professor emeritus. He served from '91-'93 as professor and head of the department of nutritional sciences at Oklahoma State University.
His tenure and dedication brought him many awards, including Outstanding Professor, Outstanding Adviser, Outstanding Mentor and the Ag Alumni Association Exemplary Faculty Award.
Eldon was a lieutenant commander in the U.S. Navy Reserve, served on the Stillwater Board of Education for nine years and was president of the Stillwater PTA Council, a member of the State PTA board, and a member of the Highland Park United Methodist Church and the church choir for over 50 years.
He is survived by his wife, Jo; daughters Laura Nelson of Lewisville, Texas, and Julie Kunzelmann (Michael) of Phoenix. He will be deeply missed by his four grandchildren, Lindsey Roberts of Denton, Texas; Carrie Roberts of Stillwater; Alexandra (Lexie) and John Kunzelmann of Phoenix. He is also survived by his brother, Burnell F. Nelson, 95, of Findlay, Ohio; niece, Barbara Decker (Bill) of Claremore and nephew, Dean Nelson (Barbara) of Findlay. Memorial donations may be made to either Highland Park United Methodist Church (HPUMC), 524 N. Stallard, Stillwater, OK 74075 or mailed to the "Undergraduate and Graduate Research Scholars Endowment in Biochemistry & Molecular Biology," Oklahoma State University Foundation, 400 S. Monroe, Stillwater, OK 74074.
