Laqueta, 65, passed from this life Aug. 13, 2016, in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Memorial services for Laqueta will be held at 10 a.m. Sept. 23 at Tupelo First Baptist Church in Tupelo.
Laqueta was born Nov. 21, 1950, in Pasadena, California, to Troy and Vidoma Pardue. She married John Vaughn in 1968. They had two children and raised many "adopted" children. In 1978, the family moved to Oklahoma.
She pursued a degree in psychology at East Central University, where she received her bachelor's and master's degrees. She was employed by McAlester Public Schools for many years and later received her doctorate from Oklahoma State University. She was a gifted educator and had a great passion for special needs children. She loved sparking the desire to learn in those she educated. Laqueta ended her teaching career at her Alma Mater, East Central University, where she was a professor until her retirement.
Her interests included swimming, reading, crafts and above all, socializing. She had a love for people and cared deeply for all. One of the last things she shared with her family was that she was ready to go home. She anticipated being with family members who had gone before her and looked forward to being in the presence of God her Father in heaven.
Laqueta was preceded in death by her parents, Troy Pardue and Vidoma Pardue-Sando; her husband, Dr. John C. Vaughn; her sisters, Quanda Jo and Terry; and her brothers, Michael, Donald, Stacy and David.
She is survived by a daughter, Stacie Kennedy and her husband, Mike, of Albuquerque, New Mexico; a son, Joshua Vaughn and his wife, Christi, of Francis; her grandchildren, Jacob Vaughn, Jonathan Winton, Lauren Rudd, Austra Wheat, Catherine Vaughn-Hetzel and Willow Vaughn; her great-grandchildren, Kandence Vaughn and Percival Vaughn; her sister, Laqueta Garcia; her brother, Andre Pardue; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
In lieu of flowers, Laqueta loved green plants, or would have preferred a donation in her name to a Leukemia Foundation of your choice.
