Chestina Christine Long, 81, passed to her heavenly home April 18, 2017, in Claremore following a lengthy illness, surrounded by her loving family. A memorial service honoring her life and love will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, May 20 in her church home of Southwest Church of Christ in Ada. Rice Funeral Service of Claremore was entrusted with cremation arrangements, per her request.
Christine was born July 5, 1935, in the Tishomingo area to Joe Tom Rhea and Katherine Robertson. Over the years, her immediate family grew to 10 siblings and four stepfathers. Being the eldest, Christine was entrusted to the care and motherly role to most of her siblings. The family lived in Oklahoma and California, finally settling in Roff.
In 1952, at the tender age of 17, Christine married Oscar Lee Wright while visiting her father in Borger, Texas. In 1965, they moved to Amarillo, Texas, where they made their home and raised their two daughters, Virginia Lynn "Ginger" and Tammy Jo.
In 1967, Christine successfully completed nursing school and would go on to have a long career as an LPN working at many hospitals and nursing facilities in Texas and Oklahoma. Being a nurse and caring for others, including her children and husband, was her greatest joy in life.
In 1988, after 30 years of marriage, Christine lost her husband suddenly. For many years she spent time with her mother and siblings, eventually sharing in her mother's final care until she passed.
In the 90s, she was married to Ken Wood for a brief time before she lost him to natural causes. She became close to his children and grandchildren.
In 2004, she met and married her current husband, Roy Long a trusted and devoted spouse for 12 years until her death.
Christine was an excellent seamstress. She enjoyed quilting and crocheting blankets for her family and making clothes to complement her porcelain doll collection. She enjoyed being with her family and surprised everyone when she and Roy went on the adventure of her lifetime a trip to Alaska in their RV. She enjoyed her first experience with fishing, putting on waders to catch salmon. Alas, she fell into the cold waters a memory Roy will never forget.
Christine is survived by her husband, Roy K. Long of Ada; two daughters, Virginia "Ginger" McKinney of Claremore and Tammy Jo Dixon of Amarillo; five grandchildren, Christopher L. McKinney and his wife, Misty, of Ada, Jamie M. Clark and her husband, Jeremy, of Pryor, Dustin D. Dixon of Huntsville, Texas, Chevy R. Dixon of Austin, Texas, and Dillon C. Dixon of Amarillo. She was also blessed with five great-grandchildren, Alex Marie, Ethan, Callie, Emma and Dakota.
Christine is survived by three brothers; four sisters; four stepchildren; and several step-grandchildren as well.
Christine was preceded in death by her first husband, Oscar L. Wright; her second husband, Ken Wood; her mother, Katherine Gahagan; her father, JT Rhea; a great-granddaughter, Taylor; and three siblings.
There will be a meal for the family at 11 a.m. at the church, before the memorial service. Burial plans are pending and will be private.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in her honor may be submitted to her favorite charities, including St. Jude Children's Hospital and her church's Haitian children outreach program.
